John P. Foley

District III (1978-1984); Presiding Judge (1981-1984)

John P. Foley was presiding judge of District III  when, on November 21, 1984, he died unexpectedly  at the age of forty-six.  A colleague reported that  earlier in the day Foley had remarked that he felt  ill and "was going home to take a rest."  

Foley had been elected to a two-year term on the  newly created appellate court in 1978, was reelected to a full six-year term in 1980, and became presiding judge in 1981.  

He earned a bachelor's degree from University of Wisconsin in 1960, spent the next three years in the U.S. Army, and graduated from Marquette University Law School in 1966.  He practiced with the Superior firm of Davis, Witkin, Foley and Weiby for ten years until, in 1976, Governor Patrick Lucey appointed him to the Eleventh District Circuit Court where he served until his election to the Court of Appeals.
