Wisconsin Rapids students to visit Wisconsin Supreme Court
Madison, Wisconsin - December 27, 2000
Fifty students from Wisconsin Rapids Lincoln High School will travel to Madison on Wednesday, Jan. 3 to watch a Supreme Court oral argument and meet with a justice.
The students will watch a case at 10:45 a.m. that demonstrates the tension between a public policy favoring giving litigants their day in court and the responsibility to enforce time limits so that cases move along. The Court will decide whether a woman was properly denied her day in court after her attorney missed a deadline.
At noon, the students will meet with Justice Ann Walsh Bradley, who has served on the Court since her election in 1995.
The field trip is made possible through Court with Class, a program sponsored by the Wisconsin Supreme Court and the State Bar of Wisconsin.
Court with Class has won two national awards since its inception four years ago. The program's aim is to enrich the high school civics curriculum by bringing high school students from around the state to watch a Supreme Court hearing and meet with a justice. Prior to the field trips, teachers receive a variety of teaching materials.
The program brings a total of approximately 1,000 high school students to the Supreme Court during each Court term (September - June).
