Elkhorn students to visit Wisconsin Supreme Court
Madison, Wisconsin - December 27, 2000
Thirty students from Elkhorn will travel to Madison on Friday, Jan. 5 with Attorney David Reddy to watch a Supreme Court oral argument and meet with the chief justice.
The students will watch a case at 9:45 a.m. in which the Court will decide whether a sex offender, as a condition of probation, can be forced to notify his neighbors of his conviction even though the Legislature has made sex offender registration information confidential.
At noon, the students will meet with Chief Justice Shirley S. Abrahamson. Abrahamson has served on the Court since 1976 and has been chief justice since 1996.
The field trip is made possible through Court with Class, a program sponsored by the Wisconsin Supreme Court and the State Bar of Wisconsin.
Court with Class has won two national awards since its inception four years ago. The program's aim is to enrich the high school civics curriculum by bringing high school students from around the state to watch a Supreme Court hearing and meet with a justice. Prior to the field trips, teachers receive a variety of teaching materials.
The program brings a total of approximately 1,000 high school students to the Supreme Court during each Court term (September - June).
