Supreme Court proceedings available live on Internet
Madison, Wisconsin - Dec. 4, 2002
The Wisconsin Supreme Court this week made its proceedings available live on the Internet for the first time. Audio of the nine cases that the Court is slated to hear this month - and all future cases - will be accessible in real time to anyone with an Internet connection.
"On the eve of our 150 th anniversary [2003], the Supreme Court is delighted to be live on the Web," said Chief Justice Shirley S. Abrahamson. "We know from the crowd that gathers in our Hearing Room for each oral argument that people are interested in our work and we welcome this new avenue for sharing our proceedings with the public."
For several years, the Supreme Court has made audio of its oral arguments available on the Web on a two-day delay. This archive will continue to be available, and the live proceedings will also be accessible in an archive on the site.
The Wisconsin Supreme Court has a long history of providing full public access to all state courts. It was among the first in the nation to permit cameras in courtrooms and is still the only supreme court in the nation to hold administrative conferences in public session.
The live audio and archived proceedings are available online .
Some Netscape users receive an error message when opening the file; click "OK" and the audio will play. Those wishing to access the live audio must have Netscape version 7 or higher or Internet Explorer version 5.5 or higher.
