Supreme Court headed for Fond du Lac
350 people have signed up to watch proceedings
Madison, Wisconsin -
April 5, 2005
For the first time in the history of the state, the Wisconsin Supreme Court will move its proceedings to Fond du Lac next week, hearing three cases on Tuesday, April 12, at the Fond du Lac City/County Administration Building, 160 S. Macy St. The community’s overwhelming response to the court’s visit has filled the courtroom to capacity for all three cases; reservations no longer are being accepted.
The visit will begin with a press conference in Branch 5 of the City/County Administration Building at 4 p.m. on Monday, April 11. Local judges and county officials will help to welcome the court; the chief justice will make remarks; and the justices will take questions.
On Tuesday, April 12, the court will hear three cases. The cases will begin at 9:30 a.m., 11 a.m., and 2 p.m. Immediately prior to each case, a local attorney who has studied the briefs will conduct a warm-up session with the audience. These attorneys are: District Atty. Tom Storm (9:30); Atty. John St. Peter (11 a.m.); and Assistant State Public Defender Mary Wolfe (2 p.m.).
High schools from Fond du Lac, Green Bay, Mishicot, and Omro will attend, as will students from UW-FdL and dozens of city and county officials and other members of the public.
Also on Tuesday, April 12, the court will have lunch at the Ramada Plaza Hotel with volunteer mediators, foster parents, and the board of directors of the Fond du Lac Conflict Resolution Center.
This trip is part of the Court’s Justice on Wheels program, begun in 1993 to make the Court’s work more accessible to the people of the state. The Fond du Lac visit marks the Wisconsin Supreme Court’s 15th Justice on Wheels trip; the court also has sat in Green Bay, Eau Claire, Wausau, Milwaukee, La Crosse, Superior, Janesville, Kenosha, Baraboo, Rhinelander, Juneau, Appleton, Stevens Point, and Racine.
