RSS

Use the shorcuts below or scroll down the page for details on RSS.

What is RSS?

RSS (Really Simple Syndication or Rich Site Summary) delivers Web content directly to a user in a timely manner without the user having to repeatedly visit the Web site from which the content originates. On this site RSS feeds are designated by the following icon: RSS

How does RSS work?

Information is delivered to subscribers via an RSS reader. Many free desktop readers are available for download from the Internet. In addition, the Internet Explorer 7.0 Web browser and Web sites like Google and Yahoo have built-in readers. Below are basic instructions for using the Internet Explorer 7.0 Feed Reader.

Internet Explorer 7.0

When the Feed button IE feed button in Internet Explorer 7.0 lights up, it means the site you are currently on offers RSS feeds. Click the icon to see the feed and, if you want, subscribe to have the feed automatically sent to your computer. When you click the subscribe button IE subscribe button the feed is automatically added to the Favorites Center and to the Common Feed List for sharing with other programs.

How often will I receive updated content?

How frequently items appear in an RSS reader depends on how often the RSS feed to which you have subscribed is checked for new content by your reader. In Internet Explorer 7.0 you can specify how often the reader checks for feed updates under "Internet Options > Feed Settings." (Note: Internet Explorer 7.0 enforces a minimum 15 minute break between updates.) Web-based readers, like Yahoo and Google readers, are updated anywhere from once an hour to once a day, depending on the popularity of the feed to which you have subscribed. How frequently desktop readers check a feed for new content is generally configurable by the user. Desktop readers typically update faster than larger, Web-based reader services.
