Justice Susan M. Crawford spoke at the Dane County Sheriff’s Office officer graduation on August 14, congratulating the graduates and thanking their families, friends, and instructors.
Her remarks focused on the responsibilities officers carry within the justice system, including protecting constitutional rights, following lawful procedures, and treating people fairly.
“Protecting individual rights and protecting the community are not competing obligations,” Justice Crawford said. “In our system, they are the same assignment.”
Justice Crawford, who served seven years as a Dane County Circuit Court judge, recalled the deputies who worked as bailiffs in her courtroom and their role in helping proceedings move safely and respectfully. She also discussed how investigations, reports, and other work performed before a case reaches court can affect what happens next.
Justice Crawford encouraged the graduates to rely on their training, exercise sound judgment, treat people with dignity, and use their authority with humility.
