Wisconsin justices, Milwaukee County judge meet with Girl Scouts earning Democracy badge

Wisconsin Supreme Court Justices Rebecca Dallet and Janet Protasiewicz joined Milwaukee County Circuit Court Judge Rebecca Kiefer on June 7 for a civics-focused session with Girl Scouts of Wisconsin Southeast.

The event brought together 50 Girl Scouts preparing for a trip to Washington, D.C. this summer. The session marked the final step for the participants in earning their Democracy badge.

During the program, Justice Dallet, Justice Protasiewicz, and Judge Kiefer spoke with the Girl Scouts about the role of courts in the state and federal systems, including differences between the Wisconsin Supreme Court and the U.S. Supreme Court. They also shared personal reflections on their paths to the bench, the decisions and challenges that influenced their careers, and the importance of public service.

The discussion gave the young citizens an opportunity to hear directly from women serving in the judiciary and to ask questions about leadership, the law, and the work of judges and justices.

The participating Girl Scouts are scheduled to travel to Washington, D.C., in July.
