Milwaukee County Judge Wagner announces retirement in 2026

Milwaukee County Circuit Court Judge Jeffrey A. Wagner has announced he will retire effective March 13, 2026, closing a judicial career that spans more than forty years of public service in one of the state’s busiest jurisdictions.

Judge Wagner joined the circuit court in 1988 following service as a municipal judge and work as an assistant city attorney. His election filled a newly created circuit court position established to help manage growing case volume in Milwaukee County. Over the course of his tenure, he has presided over a wide range of matters, most recently handling felony cases in Branch 38.

During his years on the bench Judge Wagner earned recognition for his steady approach to courtroom management and his strong record of appellate affirmances. He also contributed to collaborative efforts within the Milwaukee County Circuit Court to address caseload pressures and improve case-flow efficiency.

With Judge Wagner stepping down in March 2026, the seat will be filled by gubernatorial appointment. The appointed judge will serve through July 31, 2027.
