Juror Appreciation Month highlights service, public education

Wasburn County Juror Appreciation Open House
Washburn County held a Juror Appreciation Open House on September 24

From courthouse open houses to community conversations, Wisconsin courts marked September’s Juror Appreciation Month by thanking residents for their service and helping others understand their role in the justice system.

Washburn County Circuit Court Judge Angeline E. Winton-Roe and Clerk of Circuit Court Shannon Anderson teamed up to organize the open house as part of Juror Appreciation Month. The month recognizes both those selected for trials and those who report but are not selected. Courts depend on that participation to assemble juries and conduct trials.

Justice Rebecca Dallet led the Supreme Court’s outreach for the month, speaking with community groups and participating in media interviews about jury service. She also wrote an op-ed published in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel about jurors’ role in the justice system and jury service as a form of civic participation.

For circuit courts, recognition also offers an opportunity to explain the process and address questions from prospective jurors. Clear information about what to expect, along with acknowledgment of the time service requires, can help people arrive better prepared.

The Wisconsin Court System’s juror appreciation resource page offers materials for courts planning recognition and educational activities. The Juror Appreciation Kit includes sample thank-you letters, certificates, talking points, and suggested courthouse and community activities that can be used throughout the year.
