District 7 judges gather in Monroe County for spring meeting

Judges from across the Seventh Judicial District met March 27 in Monroe County for a full-day meeting that combined legal updates, technology training, and discussion of emerging issues facing Wisconsin courts.

The meeting, held at the Monroe County Administration Building in Sparta, featured a session on digital evidence and Fourth Amendment considerations, along with discussion of recent search and seizure developments. Judges also participated in a lively exchange on the growing role of artificial intelligence in court settings and its potential implications for judicial work.

Adams County Circuit Court Judge Tania Bonnett presented on motivational interviewing, encouraging colleagues to apply those principles beyond treatment courts to all court participants. The session was well-received and prompted thoughtful discussion among attendees.

Technology and security were a significant focus of the meeting. Staff from Consolidated Court Automation Programs (CCAP) led sessions on cybersecurity practices, Zoom updates, and system enhancements. The training included practical guidance on managing virtual hearings and maintaining secure systems, as well as hands-on support. CCAP staff also conducted laptop health checks and troubleshooting during the meeting.

The agenda also included updates from judges involved in statewide committees and initiatives, covering topics such as mental health efforts, juror experience and trauma, legislative updates, and the judicial workload study.

The meeting ended with discussion of local topics, including the use of artificial intelligence in court operations and ways to support clerks of court in their work with local governing bodies.
