Judge Edward J. Zappen Jr., who served on the Wood County Circuit Court for 30 years, died November 19, 2025, at age 83.

Judge Zappen was born November 9, 1942, in Oklahoma City. He graduated from Marquette University in 1966 with degrees in psychology and philosophy. He then served in the United States Air Force from 1966 to 1970 as a Missile Combat Crew Commander and continued his military service in the Air Force Reserves until 1989, retiring as a lieutenant colonel. He earned his law degree from Marquette University Law School in 1973.

In 1975, Judge Zappen became Wood County’s first full-time district attorney. Four years later, he was appointed to the Wood County Circuit Court, beginning a judicial career that would span three decades. He was elected to the bench repeatedly and served until his retirement in 2009.

During his years on the court, Judge Zappen presided over criminal, civil, and family law cases. He also participated in judicial education programs and contributed to the administration of the court system at the local level.

Outside the courtroom, Judge Zappen was an accomplished woodworker with a strong interest in American history. He recreated the portable desk used by Thomas Jefferson to draft the Declaration of Independence, a project that became part of a Smithsonian traveling exhibit. His research later led to the publication of his book, Jefferson’s Declaration Desk, which combined historical background with detailed woodworking instruction.

Judge Zappen remained active in the community following his retirement. His three decades of service to the Wood County Circuit Court and his broader contributions to public life are remembered with appreciation.
