Chief Justice: Juvenile court clerks provide vital service to courts, families

2022 Wisconsin Juvenile Court Clerk's Association Conference

Wisconsin Supreme Court Chief Justice Annette Kingsland Ziegler addresses juvenile court clerks at the 2022 Wisconsin Juvenile Court Clerk’s Association Conference at the Madison Concourse Hotel.

About 60 juvenile court clerks from across the state took advantage of the educational offerings at the 2022 Wisconsin Juvenile Court Clerk’s Association Conference in Madison July 20-22. Wisconsin Supreme Court Chief Justice Annette Kingsland Ziegler gave opening remarks, welcoming the group to Madison. She thanked the clerks for their hard work and contribution to the justice system and extra efforts they made to keep courts operational during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Children and families rely on the courts to resolve some of life’s most difficult issues, and juvenile court clerks play a vital role in helping people move on with their lives, Ziegler said. Much of what a juvenile court clerk does could be considered ‘behind the scenes,’ but no case can be properly resolved without a clerk to ensure the record is accurate and the right people are in the right place at the right time for court proceedings.

“You are the link that keeps the process moving forward,” Ziegler told the group that gathered at the Madison Concourse Hotel.

The conference featured presentations on court operations, processes, technology, firearms surrender, mental health, and unconscious bias, among other topics.

Dr. Mike Caldwell from Mendota Mental Health Institute presented on juvenile mental health treatment; representatives from the state Department of Children and Families presented on adoption; Milwaukee Municipal Court Judge Derek Mosley presented on unconscious bias; and Tim Grove from Wellpoint Care Network presented on secondary trauma on court staff and jurors.
