The Wisconsin Victim Witness Professional Association (WVWPA) recently honored Marathon County Circuit Court Judge Scott Corbett with an Honorable Mention award for Crime Victim Service. The recognition, presented on May 13 by members of the Marathon County Victim Witness Program, acknowledges Judge Corbett’s continued efforts to support victims and uphold their rights in the courtroom.
The WVWPA is a statewide organization that promotes best practices in victim services and works to ensure victims and witnesses are treated with dignity and respect, as outlined in the Wisconsin Constitution. Staff from the Marathon County Victim Witness Program are active members of the association and submitted Judge Corbett’s nomination.
Judge Corbett was commended for his consistent attention to the needs of crime victims and his willingness to adapt courtroom procedures to reduce trauma. Victim Witness Specialist Amiya Peterson recalled an example in which he permitted a victim to watch a trial from a private comfort room, allowing participation in the process without added emotional strain. Other colleagues noted his efforts to create a courtroom environment where victims feel heard and supported.
Assistant District Attorney Hannah Runde pointed to Judge Corbett’s clear focus on victim rights during trial proceedings, as well as his attention to community safety. Anita (Molly) Lawrence, also an assistant district attorney, shared that she regularly assures victims that their voices will be taken seriously when Judge Corbett is presiding.
Mara Ryan, Victim Witness Coordinator for Marathon County, submitted the nomination on behalf of the program. She highlighted the judge’s flexibility in allowing victims to observe court remotely when appropriate—an option that can help reduce re-traumatization while maintaining transparency.
Judge Corbett’s approach reflects a broader commitment to victim-centered justice, grounded in respectful courtroom practices and a focus on collaboration with victim service professionals.
