Judges, county partners, and child welfare stakeholders from across Wisconsin gathered in Stevens Point on October 30 for an all-sites meeting of the Judicial Engagement Team initiative. The session brought together representatives from participating counties to review implementation progress, share updates from the field, and continue statewide work aimed at improving outcomes for children and families involved in the child welfare system.
The meeting opened with an overview of JET participation and recent developments across counties. Attendees also heard updates from the Department of Children and Families on the federal Family First Prevention Services Act. Presenters reviewed current implementation efforts, planned next steps, and recent shifts toward prevention-focused services that help families safely remain together. Discussion included federal requirements, new service models, and the role of courts in supporting early intervention initiatives.
County teams presented on local activities and progress to date. Presentations included examples of strategies that have strengthened collaboration between courts, child welfare agencies, and community partners. Counties also highlighted areas where they are refining practices to support timely case movement, improve family engagement, and ensure consistent communication among those involved in child welfare proceedings.
Following county updates, participants joined profession-based round-table conversations. Judicial officers, agency representatives, attorneys, and other stakeholders shared observations about what is working well and where additional support or coordination may be helpful. The discussions offered an opportunity to compare experiences across jurisdictions and identify common themes in practice and procedure.
The meeting wrapped up with time for each county to revisit its current work plan and discuss upcoming priorities. Teams used the time to review what is working, identify areas that need attention, and outline the steps they plan to take moving forward.
Looking ahead, Trempealeau and Manitowoc counties are slated to become the newest participants in the JET initiative in 2026. County representatives attended the Stevens Point meeting to observe discussions and gather ideas about team composition and potential areas of focus.
The JET initiative continues to support collaboration among courts, child welfare partners, and communities through shared learning, consistent training, and peer-to-peer discussion. The Stevens Point meeting provided an opportunity for sites to reflect on recent work, learn from colleagues, and continue efforts to strengthen safety, permanency, and well-being for children and families across Wisconsin.
