Court outreach brings real-world insight to criminology students

Burnett County Circuit Court Judge Melissia Mogen recently met with students from iForward High School as part of the school’s Introduction to Criminology course. The online program, based in the Grantsburg School District, invited a guest speaker to support a unit covering Wisconsin’s juvenile justice system.

Judge Mogen joined the class via Zoom for a 45-minute session and walked students through how juvenile cases move through the court system, the types of matters juvenile courts handle, and the role judges play in working with families and community partners. Students asked questions about courtroom procedures and how juvenile cases differ from adult proceedings.

The visit came together after the school contacted the court system using information on wicourts.gov about educational outreach opportunities.
